Basic Keelboat with Basic Coastal Cruising

This is the entry-level sailing course, ASA 101 combined with Coastal Cruising to provide the beginner student the skills required to operate a 30-45ft sailing yacht with confidence. It provides the beginner student with the skills and knowledge to sail a boat up to 40-45 feet long in light to moderate winds and seas. No boating experience or navigation skills are required. Most of the time is spent on the water. This course is now offered in conjunction with Basic Coastal Cruising in a four day course.

-Sailing terminology and usage
-Coast Guard “Rules of the Road” for collision avoidance and safety
-All points of sail, including tacking and jibing
-Departing and returning to a dock
-Safety knowledge, including man overboard rescue
-Knots and lines (marlinespike seamanship)

What is covered;

Able to cruise safely in local and regional waters as both skipper and crew on an auxiliary sailing yacht of 20-30 feet length in moderate winds and sea conditions. Docking, reefing, and safety requirements.

Covered in this course
– Able to cruise safely in local and regional waters as both skipper and crew on an auxiliary sailing yacht of 25-38 feet length in moderate winds and sea conditions. Docking, reefing, and safety requirements.
What is Covered in This Class

– Introduction to navigation-understanding charts and GPS Operation and pitfalls

– Docking an auxiliary-engined sailing yacht

– Reefing sails

– All necessary safety systems

– Anchoring, temporarily and overnight with contingencies

– Dealing with emergencies

– Learning the essential skills to transition to sailing yachts, generally 30-40 ft or more.
